RACE MEANS SUBSPECIES. A subspecies is a group of organisms that has diverged from the species and which is on its way to being a separate species, usually no longer capable of bearing offspring with the old species.

We Whites are a subspecies. We are on our way to becoming a separate species. However, if we miscegenate with members of the old species, our highest possible destiny — specieshood — will be quashed and we will devolve back into the old species.

Miscegenation is the genocide of our subspecies and will blend to extinction those family lines of ours that engage in this great evil.

Spit when you see White miscegenationists and never accept them as friends. They are carriers of our destruction.

The genocidists know that the way to destroy White people and wipe us out is to make miscegenation seem normal and even desirable. It is neither.

We must stay separate and even isolated if possible from the infection of non-White genes.

Zombies? The current craze that few see as the metaphor that it offers.

The real zombies are the ones who can infect us with non-White genes and, when they do so, they create new zombies who in turn can create even more zombies.

It takes two Whites to make one new White child. This is the only way a child can receive the full 46 chromosomes and 20,000 or so genes containing the 3.1 billion DNA letters that make a White person.

It only takes one non-White mating with a White to produce a non-White child. This is so because such a child will only have 23 White chromosomes, 10,000 White genes and 1.5 billion DNA White letters. This child will not be half-White. It will be non-White.

If you mix a gallon of black, brown, yellow or red paint with a gallon of white paint, you will not end up with paint that is half white. You will end up with non-white paint. It is thus with the DNA code.

Don’t let the zombies get you. Stay White. Stay right. Don’t mix with the zombies. They can infect you and make you a zombie, too.

OK, so some will say that using zombies as a metaphor is over the top and that we’re all humans and it’s just natural to mate with other humans no matter their race.

Why, the fact that we can produce viable offspring with such mating must prove that there is no problem with such mating, right? Wrong. Just because something is possible does not make it desirable. As generations of parents have told their children, you can jump off a bridge if you want to, but that doesn’t make it desirable. it is the same with miscegenation.

To repeat what I wrote at the top. We Whites are a subspecies of the human species. We can become a new species, and we will become so if we do not miscegenate and if we remain separate and isolated and allow no gene transfer from the, ah, zombies (“See, there he goes again!” whine the anti-Whites).

Some of us believe that evolving into a new species incapable of bearing children with other types of humans is our highest destiny, and some of us further believe that this is also a command to us from on high.

The fundamental processes of evolution will automatically propel us into specieshood if we avoid all gene transfer from other races, because these fundamental processes work in machine-like fashion, without emotion and without conscious human intervention. However, they are slow and they may cause divergence and specieshood in some ways that may not be best for us in the long run because they may cause specific adaptations rather than general adaptations.

Specific adaptations are what we see with koalas, for example. They will starve if they can’t eat a certain type of plant or if they can’t live in just the right conditions. General adaptations are what we see with cockroaches, who will eat just about anything and live under a wide variety of conditions.

To avoid going in the wrong evolutionary direction; that is to say, to avoid building in specific adaptations that will mean our eventual extinction when conditions change (and they always will change) we are best advised to will our own evolution along a path that will build in general adaptations that will allow us to be able to survive and prosper no matter what changes happen in the future. To go in the right direction, we must live consciously and we must mate right, and we must breed like cockroaches in order to bring forth the greatest number of mutations so that the right ones will occur to move us forward, and we must avoid all gene transfer from non-Whites to us.

If you’re a betting person, put your money on the cockroach surviving and the koala going extinct.

Let us be as the cockroach and let us also avoid zombification.

We are a different kind. Let us remain so and let us consciously increase the differences.

THE EAGLE swooped down and said to the Cockroach, “You are a despicable creature and you are hated by humans. You live everywhere, you eat anything, and you breed like crazy.

“I, on the other hand, am loved by humans. I am so noble and beautiful that many humans use me as a symbol for themselves and their nations.”

The Cockroach replied, “I don’t care what humans think of me. They are not my kind. I don’t exist for their pleasure. You think you’re noble and above me in the big scheme of things? You’re a fool. You and your kind are dying out. You only eat certain things. You only live in certain places. You don’t breed enough. You are not a symbol worth copying. You are death walking.

“All individuals die. I will die. You will die. The difference is, Mr. Big Shot Eagle, that I will live on in the many offspring that I have brought into the world who have my DNA Code within them. When you die, you will cease to exist and your DNA Code will die with you. You might as well not have lived at all.

“However, it is not you or I as the individuals that we see every day in our normal lives that are most important, Mr. Eagle. It is, in the first instance, the Core DNA Code within that is truly important. It is the Core DNA Code that has transformed so-called non-living minerals into what we know as life. All life is the manifestation of the Core DNA Code and its particular variants that make each of us different in our everyday reality. So, in the second instance, what is truly important to each form of life is its particular variant of the Cord DNA Code. Your DNA Code variant makes you a particular type of Eagle, mine makes me a Cockroach.

“Some particular DNA Code variants produce dead-end creatures like you, Mr. Eagle, who have specific adaptations, and such creatures are always on the verge of dying out as we live in a dynamic universe where everything changes because everything is moving. Such creatures cannot compete when changes happen.

“And, some particular DNA Code variants produce dead-end creatures like my kind who have general adaptations. Now, bear with me, Mr. Eagle, and I will explain why we are both dead-enders in our own ways. It is a sad knowledge that I possess for both of us.

“We Cockroaches do eat just about anything (and relish it all) and we do live just about anywhere (and are very comfortable) and we do produce many more just like us (gotta love those children) as we expand our particular DNA code. We are the survivors, but we are also trapped, Mr. Eagle. You and your kind are losers because you cannot genetically adapt to ever-changing conditions so you can survive and prosper. We Cockroaches, on the other hand, are losers precisely because we can survive without having to genetically adapt. You see the problem, do you not? No? Well, I will explain in due course

“Now, Mr. Eagle, you spoke of humans, so here’s something about them and especially about White humans. Many of them are ignorant of the ways of existence, and they, like you, fail to see that they must adapt and they must breed like us Cockroaches if they are to survive as a distinct life form and if they are to ever fulfill their highest possible destiny which, ironically, is to go extinct as they are now and to become a new species of human that is incapable of breeding with the other kinds of humans that still walk the Earth long after they would have died off had White humans not intervened to feed them and to medicate them and take care of them, just as they are taking care of you and your kind, Mr. Eagle.

“We Cockroaches know, with a cosmic sadness, that while we have survived for millions of years pretty much unchanged, that we are not the end all and be all of evolution, and it is precisely because we haven’t had to change that is our problem. We are both trapped, Mr. Eagle. Your kind will die out. My kind will continue to live, but we won’t evolve. We’re perfect as we are. We long for challenges that will force our particular DNA Code to change in order for us to survive so that we can become more, so that we will become more intelligent and more conscious, but we continue to meet all challenges without evolving. It is sad, in the long run.

“You see, Mr. Eagle, evolution requires change, not stability. Mr. Eagle, you will go extinct — truly extinct — because you are not able to evolve to meet changing conditions because of your special adaptations. And, we Cockroaches will not go extinct, for the same reason — we cannot change to a higher form, because we are perfectly capable of meeting most changes in the environment just as we are.

“But, back to White humans, Mr. Eagle. The hope of expanding and improving their particular DNA Code lies with those few White humans, who have the so-called ‘racist gene’ and the brains to understand these things and who can consciously adapt and evolve if they do the right things. It is this sub-set of White humans — the ones with the so-called racist gene — who will break out of the trap and who will will their own evolution, and who will go extinct as they are so that they can transform themselves into a new species that is just a little bit stronger, a little bit healthier, and a little bit smarter than other humans.

“You see, the White humans with the so-called racist gene have already started changing from other White people. They have a mutated gene that will lead to other mutations, and if they breed like us Cockroaches, they will spread their mutations to other White family lines. Oh, they look just like other White humans, but that’s the way it is with most mutations — they are subtle and often internal, but they are also very real. Their major survival advantage is that their racist gene helps them avoid miscegenation and even close contact with darker humans. These mutations are changing the particular DNA Code that they have just a few letters at a time, but the ramifications are going to be Earth-shattering if all goes as we Cockroaches believe they will in the fullness of time.

“And, these few ones, the White ones with the so-called racist gene — have the power to bring about their own further mutations. They have a plasticity of their DNA Code that is part of their mutation, and they just need the information on how to use that plasticity to make the right changes. They need to know how to use their minds to will their own evolution in the right direction.

“It is these White humans, the ones with the so-called racist gene, that are on the threshold to a new type of human that will be born from them. These new humans, this new species, will eat just about anything, live just about anywhere, and they will breed their kind like we Cockroaches breed our kind — but the difference is that they will be able to use their brains to keep evolving ever higher.

“You look at me, Mr. Eagle, and wonder how I know these things about Destiny, and I say to you, there is more to existence than you or I will ever understand, but I tell you that what I know, I know, and it is true and this knowledge comes from that which brought somethingness to the nothingness and which programmed that first molecule of DNA — that cornucopia of life itself — to endlessly and tirelessly bring forth and tinker with life in order to eventually fill all of existence with a life form that understands the meaning of existence and which is the master of all of existence and which is as a god to creatures that have not evolved to such a level.”

“WE LIVE IN REALLY STUPID times, man,” said Homeless Jack. “Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, the same could be said for all times, but our stupid times are much worse.

“We face extinction, man, and soft genocide is going on each and every day now as our stupid people — our kind — the non-Jewish White kind — mostly seem oblivious to what is going on.

“You see, we are products of nature just like every other organism. We ain’t some special creation. We ain’t slightly lower than some imaginary angels. We evolved from that first DNA molecule just like all other life on this dark planet, man.

“Because we’re the products of nature, we face the same dangers as all other organisms. The danger we now face may do us in. We really do face our extinction as a distinct type and we may devolve back into the dark masses from which we evolved not too many thousands of years ago.

“Man, evolution is a little like distilling a bucket of goo. A few drops rise up and leave the mass of goo and become different but only so long as those drops are isolated from the goo. Some of those drops drip back in and they are lost to the new batch of liquid that is different from the old.

“See, man, that’s where we are today. We got distilled out, but now we’re dripping back in. Drip, there goes another one, drip, another.

“Why is this happening? It’s because our brains have taken us to our fail point, man. We’ve thought our way into developing mass transportation so that we are no longer isolated from the dark masses. And, the evil doers who want all mankind to blend together are working hard to make it seem that we should all drip back into the mass and just not be our White selves anymore.

“That’s the fail point, man. It’s a threshold. We can now go extinct, or we can take over from the blind workings of evolution and become a new tribe, a new people. Screw the rest. Let those dummies drip back in. We have to separate out. We have to find our new isolation. We have to keep distilling ourselves.

“But, before we can do that we need to understand that abortion for us, miscegenation for us, low birth rates for us, forms of marriage that hold down our birthrate for us, celibacy for us, meaningless wars that kill our young people for us, are all helping with our extinction.

“We need a new morality, man. We have to rid ourselves of centuries of false thinking and conditioning and we need to start being ourselves, for ourselves again.

“Christianity ain’t cutting it for us man. It ain’t working. It’s helping kill us off. It’s not really our religion anyway. It came out of the desert. What the hell do we have to do with deserts? Man, we evolved in the misty regions of Europe. That’s why we have white skin and many of our other characteristics.

“We don’t need no childish desert religion based on myths of thousands of years ago. We need an adult religion that is one with science and us and what we know about how things really all started and where they’re all going.

“Is there a room for a God in our new religion? Yup. We have to understand human psychology and take it into account.

“Also, as we ask what is behind this and this and this and then that, we reach a point where we just don’t know. So, it’s like we see a flower and we can think no more about it or we can go deeper into how that flower is and as we go ever deeper we come to molecules and then atoms and then sub-atomic particles and waves and energies but then we reach a wall.

“What is behind the sub-atomic particles, waves and energies? My answer, man, is that is where God — that which started it all — the First Cause, is to be found. But He ain’t like He’s portrayed in the false religions, man. He’s some sort of primal force, some spinning unknown that creates, maintains and then destroys — only to create, maintain and destroy again and again as He expands outward to devour the nothingness with His somethingness.

“Man, he’s behind the big spinning Fylfot in the sky. That ain’t Him, man, but He’s behind it and that’s the closest look we may have of His face: the spinning Fylfot. It’s everywhere we look, man. It’s in the water draining from our toilets. It’s in the shape of DNA. It’s in the hurricanes. He’s been right here in front of us since the start, man. He’s been hiding in plain sight and few have ever realized it. But we realize it, man.

“And we’re part of that expansion plan — not because we’re loved, but just because we’ve evolved to the point where we are at the fail point, which is also a jumping-off point to a new us. You see, the fail point had to be reached at some time. It is completely necessary for the next jump upward. Our getting close to our extinction is necessary for our evolution. It is the next choke point in history. It is the bottleneck that I spoke about before.

“Listen, man, saving our kind of human (the non-Jewish White kind) is the only thing that is important in this life. We are our genes. If they are watered down or are mixed with genes of other races, we will face extinction.

“These are more than just my opinions. These are scientific facts. Let me briefly explain: We humans have 46 chromosomes. On those chromosomes are approximately 25,000 genes total. Those genes are the recipe to make us.

“When a male and female human mate, each one contributes 23 chromosomes to the new child that will be conceived. Two Whites will produce a White. One White and one anything else cannot produce a new White person (the child may sometimes look mostly White, but the child won’t be truly one of us because it will have 23 non-White chromosomes, not the full 46 White chromosomes, and will thus have roughly 12,000 gene “ingredients” in its recipe that aren’t White).

“Don’t give me any of that mumbling stuff about how our 46 chromosomes and 25,000 genes aren’t all “White” chromosomes or genes. I know that, man, but stop picking the fly specks out of the pepper. You get the point, and, if you don’t, go drip back into the dark goo, man.

“We gotta get past the fail point. Not all of us are going to make it and many of our families are going to go dark, man. They’ll still have the old White family names, but they’ll be dark families, man. The White ancestors who had those names will live no more in their genotypes. They will have been killed off by miscegenation and all the rest. They will be extinct. Their genes will be gone.

“We have to tell our people about this stuff, man, because they, each one of them, will have to choose. It is not right that they just become extinct and not even realize it. We must warn them and expose them to the truth. But, from that point on, it is up to them to choose wisely or go extinct.

“For us, man? We’re going to evolve ever higher. We’re going to expand and eat our way across the universe. And, we ain’t gonna apologize to anyone for taking this righteous path that is our highest possible destiny. And, we’re going to have the Fylfot next to and directly on our skin, man, for this is what the First Cause wants.

“He is pleased that we have matured and evolved to finally know these things and to finally see the truth of the Fylfot that He has created and which is His engine of creation, expansion, maintenance and destruction throughout all of existence and He is also pleased when we show our respect by having this symbol with us at all times and especially next to and on our skin.”

“I KNOW YOU’RE trying to figure out more about this religion of mine, man,” said Homeless Jack, “so here’s a basic lexicon that may help you get it. I got this from Arman.

“And, you probably want to know how many believers there are in addition to Arman. Well, all I know is, I believe. One is enough. You see, that ‘one’ principle is also part of our beliefs, our kind of human is like the first point that started all of existence. It all starts with One.

“We are a branching off, and each one of us is another possible branching if we have as many children as possible in our image.”

Abiogenesis–The theory that life can arise from non-living matter.

Adaptation–The process whereby an organism becomes better suited to its environment.

General adaptations are those that fit an organism for life in broad environmental zones, as opposed to ‘special adaptations’ which are specializations for a particular way of life. Organisms with broad general adaptations often survive while those with special adaptations become extinct when changes occur in the environment.

Absorption–Armanist religious concept that holds that living organisms can absorb parts of the code of other organisms as well as from so-called non-living things. Works with natural selection. Often seen as mimicry.

Allele–One of a series of different forms of a gene.

Arman–The Teacher. Receiver and promulgator of the revelations and divine inspiration.

Armanism–one of the names used for this belief system.

Basic Impulse or just Impulse–The inherent “desire” to be and to be more.

Blenders–Those who promote the blending of all races, religions and nations into a sort of plain wrap human being that we call the Tan Everyman. Blenders do not like human differences, but sometimes push “diversity;” not because they actually want human diversity, but because they see this as a step to blending. The idea of the Blenders is to keep all lands where humans live from being exclusively of one race, one religion and one nation. One way they try to do this is by encouraging the mass immigration of peoples who are far different from the natives in those lands, to those lands.

Then, over time, the Blenders expect the “rough edges” and “extremes” of racial types, religious beliefs and nationalistic tendencies in those lands to disappear by blending in with the mass at the center of the bell curve.

The ultimate goal of Blenders is to have one universal race, one universal religion, one universal nation that is worldwide. “Blenders” is our word for them. They do not call themselves this.

Blending–In nature, the majority of any type of life will be clustered around the center of the bell curve in characteristics for that type of life. This is natural. In humans, we not only see this as the blind workings of nature, but we also see some humans trying to increase the mass near the center while eliminating the different versions that are in a minority. This is an attempt to remove the “rough edges” of different races, religions and nations and have them all become part of a sort of plain wrap world where conformity in all ways is the norm. Some well meaning, but misinformed, people believe this is the way to have a peaceful planet. Unfortunately for those pushing this idea, it won’t work — because the spinning of existence will always cause change and differences. And, all life, whether it is aware of this or not, will continue to struggle to be and to be more. Life is competition. Life is struggle. Differences are what move us forward. Without differences there would be no evolution.

Blue eyes–A recent evolutionary development, probably emerged within the last 10,000 years according to recent research.

Bottleneck–There have been recurring bottlenecks on Earth. These have been times when most living things died off (think dinosaurs, for example), and only a few types, for whatever reason, survived and got through the bottleneck to replenish the Earth. The coming great die-off of Homo sapiens will not be complete. Many with Code A will be saved because of their right blood, right belief and right actions and they’ll survive and get through to the other side of the bottleneck and become a new species. In other words, they will have the right DNA combination (the correct mutations) and other factors that will immunize them to what is to come — or which will, in some way that we are unaware of, protect them. White skin is an absolute necessity according to the revelations. Why? We can only guess.

Cause and effect–We live in a cause and effect universe. Effects have causes. Things always happen because something causes them to happen.

Chromosomes–DNA is organized into chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes. The chromosomes are of different sizes. Chromosome number 1, for example, which is the largest human chromosome, has about 220 million base pairs. A male and female each contribute 23 chromosomes to a new child. Because Whites are a later evolutionary development, their genes are less fixed and are more fragile than genes in other humans. This means most genes for White characteristics are recessive and will not be expressed if a White bears children with a non-White. It thus takes two Whites–a White male and a White female–to produce a White child.

Code, The–That which is within everything in existence that makes it what it is. In life that we are aware of, the code is in the form of DNA. The code is the same on the most basic levels of existence and then is changed and modified to make all that exists. It is also this way within life and within human beings. It is programmed to spread and expand into every possible niche.

Code A–Our term for the specific code that makes non-Jewish European-descended White people as we are. Believers will sometimes just say “The Code,” and by this they usually mean Code A.

Comfort–All living things seek comfort. The comfort sought may be psychological or physical. The desire for psychological comfort can override the desire for physical comfort and can be used for good or bad. Nietzsche thought humans had a “will to power.” We think he was wrong. We believe there is a “will to comfort,” found in humans and all living organisms, and the will to power is just a subset of the psychological desire for comfort found in some individuals.

Competition–A natural and desirable part of existence.

Correspondence–As above, so below. As below, so above. There are links unseen between things on the surface that appear to have little or no connection, and there are “buttons” that can be pushed with proper symbols and rites.

Cosmic Balancing–Similar to the concept of karma.

Cosmic evolution–the study of universal change and the assembly and composition of energy, matter and life. This is at the heart of our beliefs; the evolution of everything. Human evolution is just a small part of this, but since we are humans, we give it a lot of attention. We understand, however, that we are not unique or special except for the fact that, as far as we know, we are the only organisms on Earth who can think the abstract thoughts about this and other things, and we are the only organisms on Earth — again as far as we know — who can take an active and conscious part in determining the direction of our future evolution. The same basic forces at work in cosmic evolution are also at work in the evolution of life. Understand the very small, and you’ll understand the very large. Understand the very large, and you’ll understand the very small.

Here are the general steps of Cosmic Evolution:

– The emergence of the first “point” of energy and forces in the absolute nothing

– The spinning evolution of the energy and forces into vibrations, elementary particles and atoms

– The spinning evolution of atoms into galaxies, stars, planets, etc.

– The spinning evolution of star material into mineral elements

– The spinning evolution of those mineral elements into the molecular building blocks of life

– The spinning evolution of those molecules into life forms

– The spinning evolution of advanced life forms into intelligence

– The spinning evolution of intelligent life into higher consciousness

Deadenders–Those who do not reproduce their kind or who reproduce too few so that their code does not survive into the next generation.

Deme–A local population of one species that share a distinct gene pool. When isolated from other demes of the same species they can become a distinct subspecies or species.

Dissimulation, Religious–Religiously sanctioned act of lying or otherwise doing whatever is necessary to prevent persecution for one’s beliefs and faith.

Divine Inspiration–The Teachings are the product of revelation and divine inspiration. Believers should also seek divine inspiration in their daily lives by praying to be guided in doing the right things.

DNA–Deoxyribonucleic acid is made up of four bases: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine that are usually abbreviated A,T,C,G. DNA is organized into units called chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes. A child receives 23 chromosomes from his or her mother and 23 from his or her father. Great emphasis is put on DNA, genes, genotypes, phenotypes and similar concepts in this belief system, as DNA is considered to contain the essential person, and to be that which is to be improved and which moves forward. Our individual bodies are constructed by the DNA and our DNA can survive our individual bodies. All life is built from the inside out by the DNA spiral. The DNA spiral looks like a twisted ladder.

All DNA is the same. It is the order that is important. Very minor changes in the sequence or order of the DNA can have major effects. This is often misunderstood or misrepresented by blenders who want everyone to think that all humans are the same except for different paint jobs. They’re not. To say all humans are 99% the same may sound as though we’re all the same, but when you consider we’re talking about 3.1 billion letters of DNA, 1% difference can be major. Here are some other comparisons that you’ve probably seen. The actual percentages shown here might be slightly different from what you’ve read, because the percentages and counts are often updated as new information is learned. Chimps and humans are about 96% the same (the old figure was 98.5%). Slugs and humans are about 70% the same. Daffodils and humans are about 35% the same. Bananas and humans are about 50% the same. This last comparison is often cited this way: Although humans and bananas are 50% the same, this doesn’t mean that a human is half banana. Keep that in mind when you hear blenders say that all humans are the same because they share 99% the same DNA with other humans. It is the differences that are important, and minor differences often produce major results. DNA is the almost robotic molecule of life. It works automatically and never stops working in tinkering with life to try to expand itself into all of existence and to find the best carriers of itself.

Dominant–(1)The primary type of any organism in an area. All life “tries” to be dominant. (2) In genetics, the form of a gene that is expressed in the characteristics of an organism. Generally, many of the characteristics of White people are recessive and require both a White male and a White female to produce a White child.

Drift, genetic–Random fluctuations of gene combinations that are often neutral and nonadaptive, but which may become fixed in a small population even though they do not appear to offer any survival advantage.

Drogh–Our religious term for ground of existence or the field. It is where matter comes into existence from vibrations.

Enlightenment–Awakened to the true nature of reality. It is more than just an intellectual understanding, but may include that, and is a quiet but exalted or ecstatic glowing feeling of oneness with the First Cause that words can’t describe. One who is truly enlightened will see patterns and truths that others miss and will see the universe in a back yard.

Essence—The core of everything in existence. Used with a capital “E” to refer to the Essence of the indigenous peoples of Europe both still in Europe and in the European diaspora. With the capital “E” it is similar in meaning to DNA, genotype, phenotype and Code A.

Evolution—The gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form. We accept this as a reality. However, we believe that evolution on Earth is just part of Cosmic Evolution. As far as evolution on Earth goes, we do not believe that Darwinian evolution has all the answers of evolution. Darwin got much right, but there is more. Much more. Note that evolution and Darwin are not synonyms. Darwin posited what he believed about evolution, but there are other evolutionary views that seek to answer some of the questions that Darwin couldn’t answer. For example, Darwin’s idea of gradual evolution never satisfactorily accounted for the emergence of completely new types beyond the species level. Enter punctuated equilibrium and similar theories. Evolution is all about differences in living things, and evolution usually requires isolation to work. Evolution is a branching off as nature tinkers with the DNA code and shuffles the letters of DNA in different ways. The differences “stick” if there is isolation–either geographic or reproductive–and if the changes offer a survival advantage (note–some changes do not offer survival advantages but also stick, perhaps because of pleiotropic factors) so those with the differences do not blend back in with those they branched off from. Remember also that Darwin lived and died before DNA was discovered. In addition to changes caused by adaptation and natural selection, all life on Earth is constantly bombarded by various types of cosmic rays and other forces that can cause some of the letters of DNA to be knocked out of place and which can cause mutations. Nature works on a trial and error basis. It tries something, and if it works it keeps it. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t keep it. Evolution doesn’t take place when gene pools reach equilibrium, because evolution means change.

Exogenesis–Hypothesis that life on Earth came from elsewhere. Similar to panspermia but more limited in its scope.

Expand always; contract never–Armanists believe this is a command that is within everything in existence and that anything or any living things that disobey this command will become extinct. Humans of one type expand and change the frequency of genes in the gene pool by becoming more numerous than other types of humans, primarily by having higher fertility rates than other humans. Those who produce the most children who live to produce their own children in great numbers will eventually replace other types of humans who do not breed as fast or in such quantity.

External Signs (or characteristics)–the genetically determined way we look. Phenotype.

Extreme Individualism–An error in thinking that causes one to not see that one is part of a group of like beings and the product of a group genotype.

Fail Point–The paradoxical threshold of evolution where humans now find themselves. By evolving big brains,we have reached this point where we are able to stop the evolutionary process of natural selection for the best qualities. The weak and the strong can both survive under such conditions and pass on their codes. This puts the best adapted and least adapted on an equal footing in the chance for survival and in expanding their codes. Believers seek to get past the fail point and to cross the threshold to move higher.

Faith–Faith is important for a number of reasons including the fact that the brain can cause physical effects that can be beneficial.

False ideas–humans have many false ideas in their humancentric ideologies and beliefs, and these false ideas often block the path and must be identified and corrected. The major false idea in this age, one which leads to many subsets of other false ideas, is that all humans are the same. This idea is anti-nature and anti-evolution. Our view, to be clear, is not that there are superior or inferior humans, but that there are many, many differences. Humans have evolved and adapted for certain environments and as a result of these adaptations and resultant gene changes, they have acquired other secondary changes.

Field, The–Also known as the ground of existence and Drogh. Behind everything.

First Cause, The–That which created something out of absolute nothing. Used interchangeably with “God.” The Ultimate. The Source of all of existence.

Flow, The–The great spinning river of existence in which the Earth bobs along like a very tiny piece of dust as a little zoo of a planet.

Free will–We believe that human free will is not as free as many people believe and that our actions, in a very broad sense, are more gene-directed than many people want to believe. However, there is a level of free will that is important, even though it is difficult to ever know whether we are acting because of our genetic programs or because of free will.

Frequency dependent selection–the fitness of a phenotype is dependent on its frequency relative to other phenotypes in a given population. Blenders try to change the frequency of genes in a population via immigration in order to change the population.

Gene–a portion of DNA that carries the code for some action or characteristic of the living organism. Humans have somewhere between 20-30,000 genes. The exact number has not been determined. They are the program within us. Genes “want” to survive and struggle to be expressed. We are their way to do this. Competition and struggle are natural and exist throughout all of existence. This competition and struggle is inherent in existence itself. Note that a gene is not an actual thing, but a location on a strand of DNA. We often say: Genes Are Us.

Gene fixation–one variant of a particular gene (allele) remains the only one in a population. A partial but incomplete example of the process may be easily seen in Finland which is considered the blondest nation on Earth. That is, the allele for blond hair is almost the only allele in the population, and if gene flow were completely stopped, the allele for blond hair would become fixed in the population.

Gene Flow–The transfer of alleles of genes from one population to another. Gene flow stops divergence and prevents the emergence of new species from the old species. New species develop when the gene flow is stopped. The major way gene flow is stopped is by physical separation and isolation. Gene flow causes homogenization or blending.

Genetic Drift–A mechanism for evolutionary change resulting from the random fluctuations of gene frequencies in small, isolated populations.

Genetic homeostasis–the tendency of a population to maintain a constant genetic composition.

Genetic Isolation–The absence of gene flow between populations as a result of geographic separation or other mechanisms that prevent gene flow.

Genocide–Actual genocide is the killing off of genes by any cause. Legal genocide is defined by the U.N. We accept both actual and legal genocide as realities. Whites are victims of genocide by both definitions.

Genotype–Your internal blueprint or code. All the letters of DNA in their particular arrangement that makes you, uniquely you. A descriptor for genome which is the actual, physical DNA molecules.

Gens–Latin for clan, race, nation, people, tribe.

God–Unknowable. The First Cause. The Source. That which did the impossible and created itself and everything else from nothing. We see the something that was created in the nothing as an invisible, spinning, spiraling and expanding skein of existence that underlies all of existence. No human form. Sometimes used as synonym for nature or creator or similar terms. When you peel back everything to a time before there was anything, you are left with a mystery of what started existence and you are left with this concept. The necessary end of all arguments. One contra theory holds that there was never a time when there was absolutely nothing.

Although, as a thing easily said, we often speak of the “big bang” as the start of existence, our reason tells us that something was already in existence at that time–perhaps subatomic particles or waves–so the first cause must have been before the big bang.

God gene–Is an hypothesis that some humans inherit genes that predispose them to spirituality. Gene VMAT2 is thought to be involved. This gene doesn’t directly cause one to be spiritual, but causes certain chemical changes in the brain that are interpreted as spirituality. The importance for us in this faith, even if the hypothesis is proven wrong, is the indication it gives of the increasing recognition that genes cause various attitudes and behaviors as well as the physical characteristics that we see, such as eye color and skin color. We believe that there is a gene variation that may draw some people to our beliefs while others will not be so drawn because they lack the particular allele for this, and just cannot fully understand the teachings on a deep level. Teachers will point to the well known example of color blindness in which some people with certain gene variations can’t distinguish between the colors red and green. No matter how hard those with this gene variation try, they just can’t see the difference. No one would call them dumb. It’s just a difference in genes. So it is with many of our beliefs. Some people simply won’t get it.

Golden Rule–Treat all others as you want to be treated and treat all others as they treat you.

Great Die-Off or Mass Extinction–Arman had a vision of a time when most humans would die off and only believers would be spared to get through the bottleneck.

Ground of Existence (also Field or Drogh)–Thousands of years ago people began realizing that our everyday objects were made up of ever smaller objects called atoms. Then they realized that atoms were made of even smaller objects. Today, it is recognized that subatomic particles, which can also be subatomic waves, may be what underlies everything in existence and that all of reality is built up from them. Subatomic waves may be the source of matter. Some religions, sensing this reality, posit the notion that everything is thus illusion. We reject that notion. We do sometimes indicate that everything we know in our universe is a projection of the subatomic particles/waves but this idea of “projection” is far different from other uses of the term, most notably in the way a film is projected. In our use of the term, we see the subatomic particles/waves spinning into reality that which they are the essence of. The unseen skein.

Homo Armanius–The next man. The new model human. We are the ones before his emergence and he will only emerge from us and no others.

Ideal–Of every thing in existence there is an ideal. Finding the ideal in our kind is important so that it can be reached and then can be overcome to move ever higher. The Ideal for living conditions for believers would be for them to have their own land free of all discordant elements so that they could pursue their evolutionary and highest destiny exclusively among their own people. This Ideal Land is something to be sought, prayed for and worked for so that the people may truly be free.

Imagery, Religious–Fylfots, circles, spirals, spinning, turning, bramble bushes, natural forests, rivers, oceans.

Impulse, The–The inbuilt need or desire in existence to be and to be more and to expand always.

Internal Signs (or characteristics)–the way we are that can’t easily be seen. Our intelligence, personality, etc. that are genetically determined.

Isolation–Physical or reproductive isolation are usually required for speciation to occur.

King of the Senses–In humans, the king of the senses is eyesight. We can reason to this conclusion by starting with the fact that the purpose of all life is to make more like itself and in humans nature has tied the libido to sight. As the king of the senses, sight is also tied into our survival instincts. We generally sense danger by seeing it and we can usually know who is us, and who is not us by sight.

We also believe that we must not deny our senses and that we have them for a reason–to help us survive to breed. We believe that we must feed our senses by being active, and it is by being active that we move higher.

Lamarckism–Theory that an organism can pass on characteristics that it acquires in its lifetime to its offspring. Largely discredited. However, we believe that the basic ideas behind the theory (but with modern terms) are valid but have not yet been proven. We believe that living organisms (maybe just some and maybe just under certain conditions) do pick up “essences” of various other living organisms and even so-called non-living things and forces in the environment that cause changes to the genetic code under some circumstances and that some of these changes can be passed on to offspring when the conditions are right. The methods of picking up these essences are open to speculation. It may be from viruses or bacteria injecting the essences into our DNA or it may be something different. We believe that there is a sort of chameleon effect or plasticity with life that is different from, but works with natural selection. We point to certain insects that mimic the twigs or leaves upon which they live as examples of this absorption of the essence of other things into the genes.

Law of Inertia–An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by another force.

Living universe–The idea that the universe and all that is in it is not dead. In our definition, it is not alive either, as we usually define the term, but is all connected via subatomic particles and subatomic waves (or by currently unknown forces) in a skein or field that we do not fully understand, such that the universe, or parts of it, responds automatically by receiving sensory input from everything in existence. A simple analogy might be to think of a stove made of iron. When the stove is heated up, the iron automatically changes because of the heat. In the universe, it’s as though everything that exists is wired to the underlying and unseen First Cause. Another analogy is a spider web. The spider picks up vibrations if any part of the web is moved even slightly. This is how the spider finds prey.

Meditation–We reject the idea that sitting still for hours on end and depriving the senses of stimulation is beneficial for believers and will lead to any deeper understanding of existence. Our meditation is usually from a few minutes up to an hour of quiet reflection while viewing a proper focus object and while quietly asking for guidance from above. Sometimes, in some believers, longer times may be helpful. We also believe that we must not deny our senses to gain a deeper understanding, but actually bathe our senses in things of the senses. Thus, we believe that we must be physically moving and taking in sights, sounds and smells–that we must experience things–to gain fuller understanding. Walks in woods, fields, mountains, deserts and even in cities help us understand, if one does this consciously and actively. Our brains need the input let in by our senses. We must live consciously and always observing the patterns all around us and we must learn from everything.

Method acting–We believe that one of the ways to improve, advance and help our evolution is to imitate certain ideals and to act the part of the ideals in all ways possible. We see this as being similar to method acting. A method actor will try to become the character he plays, and will often try to do this by doing everything in the same way as the character; which can include eating the same food, using the same toothpaste, using the same soap, living in the same place and wearing the same socks and underwear, of a real person being portrayed. By taking on the outward aspects of the character, the method actor tries to evoke the inward aspects. Everything we do or experience is registered in our subconscious mind by our senses and causes changes in the way we perceive the world and the way the world perceives us and how we act and react to various stimuli. Miscegenation–mating outside the genotype. Forbidden by the First Cause as a great sin or wrong against the First Cause.

Mutagen–is an agent or substance that can bring about a permanent alteration to the physical composition of a DNA gene such that the genetic message is changed.

Mutation–A Mutation occurs when a DNA gene is damaged or changed in such a way as to alter the genetic message carried by that gene. Random mutations are sort of nature’s wild cards to change life to survive by throwing in random changes that might or might not stick. They are happening all the time. Most are minor and go unnoticed. Some are detrimental to the organism. There are also mutations of chromosomes and these have much greater effects.

Natural Law–Naturally occurring principles of existence that channel existence toward evolution. Natural law is built into the structure of existence. Humans must deduce natural law correctly, and these teachings provide help.

Natural Rights–Those rights that you have just because you are here. They are yours because of your birth. No other men or groups of men or government can legally grant them to you or take them away from you. They are yours. Among these natural rights are your right to your existence, your right to reproduce as you wish, your right to associate with or not associate with anyone of your choosing for any reason of your choosing, your freedom, self-determination, self-governance, self-identification, your right to believe as you wish and to tell others of your beliefs, your right to pursue your personal happiness as you alone see fit so long as you do not harm others.

Natural Selection–The process in nature by which the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and pass on their genetic characteristics to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated. Survival of the fittest in the struggle to be and to be more. Natural selection brings about evolutionary change by favoring differential reproduction of genes. This changes the gene frequency from one generation to the next. Natural selection does not cause genetic change, but once there is change it encourages some genes instead of others. Natural selection requires genetic variation, differential reproduction and heritable characteristics.

We believe that natural selection is often being overridden in modern society due to birth control, abortions and miscegenation and that this artificial state of affairs is blocking or destroying the best evolutionary path for many of our European indigenous people still in Europe and in the European diaspora.

Nature–The word “nature” as we use it means far more than the narrow meaning it is usually given. In our use it means all of existence and sometimes it means God. So, when believers say they study nature for clues to answers to the big questions, they don’t just mean they’re going on nature walks (but that could be part of it). They mean they’re looking at subatomic particles and subatomic waves, galaxies, birds, flowers, physics, psychology and everything else that is in existence.

Notus–Literally “Not Us.” Not our people.

Numinous feeling–Filled with an overwhelming sense of wonder and awe at being in the presence of the divine. We find this most easily just before dawn and just before dusk, during storms and in forests and other places away from civilization.

Only one path–This is the one genuine path for us that leads to true higher states. It requires, among other things, physical evolution. This is one of the main differences between this belief system and others. We believe the core of our being is our unique physical DNA code that we carry and which has spun us into existence. It is an absolute prerequisite that one must have to take the next step up. It is the code that must survive and expand and we are a means to that end as it is a means to our end. However, this is not to be seen as though we are merely robots carrying a real something inside of us that pulls our strings and orders us about. We are one. We are its outer aspect and it is our inner aspect. It is within every cell of our body.We would not exist as the beings we are except for it, and it cannot survive and evolve except for us. It is our essence.

Order is important–DNA is composed of just four basic chemicals (A,T,C,G) yet those four chemicals when shuffled in different ways produce all the variety of life that we are aware of. This tells us that it is not the difference in the chemicals of DNA that is important (because there are none) but the way they are arranged. Change the order just a little and you have a fly or a mouse or an ape or a man or a tree. And, the emphasis here is on change the order just a little. It doesn’t take much. A few letters changed and one has white skin or non-white skin, straight hair or curly hair.

Our Way for Ourselves Alone (OWFOA)–Another name for this religion, philosophy, world view.

Panspermia–Hypothesis that “seeds” of life exist all over the universe and that some of these seeds caused life on Earth as well as elsewhere.

People, The–When used by believers it usually means either believers or those who may not yet be believers but who share our 46 chromosomes. Synonym for Believers.

Phenotype–That which is built by the genotype. The way you look. The outward manifestation of the inner code.

Placebo God–Human psychology requires an ender of all arguments and something that is bigger and anchored and which gives meaning to man’s short life. Our blessing and our curse is our large brain. It lets us think about existence and meaning and discover the laws of existence; this is both the blessing and the curse. Belief, if it is real, acts upon our minds and our minds act upon our bodies in real and physical ways by releasing various chemicals that can help or hinder us on the path. If one does not believe in God; then one should learn to do so.

Pleiotropy–Genes have more than one effect. For example, when an attempt was made to domesticate foxes by breeding them for the quality of dog-like tameness, the foxes also automatically developed other dog-like qualities such as floppy ears, turned up tails, and patched coats of different colors. The changes weren’t expected, but they had the added benefit of allowing people to see the “content of the character” of the changed foxes. The outward reflected the inward. In other words, in the case of the foxes, it wasn’t possible to breed for certain personality traits without also changing the exterior appearance of the foxes. The same effect works in humans. Change skin from black to white and you change much more than just skin color.

Prayer–At dawn and dusk.

Primary Command, The–The primary command for all life, including human life, is to survive as long as possible to make as many more like itself as physically possible. This is less about the survival of the individual and more about the survival of the DNA code that is passed on to offspring. Some falsely believe that the primary command for organisms is an instinct for self-preservation. While at the level of the whole organism, this may appear true, it must be understood that it is the code within that seeks survival and which wants the whole organism to survive in order to expand and spread the particular version of the code within. Living organisms, including humans, that do not breed in their image, are evolutionary dead ends whose code will never move higher.

Proper living–Living as long as possible to protect and expand the code by having as many children in the image of the people as possible. Everything else in our lives is secondary to this. We are told that the evolution of our kind will only come by having vast numbers of us filling all lands. We know also that it is not the individuals who are important, but the Code. The individuals carry the Code and they are the way it is expanded.

Punctuated equilibrium–The theory that species have little change for long periods (stasis) and then experience rapid and major changes.

Pure Lands–The lands that God has commanded believers to take, purify and hold forever for the people alone, where believers can live free from outside influences, discordant forces and gene transfer, and where they can practice their faith without persecution and in peace and in which they can continue to evolve along the righteous path.

Purity–The actual purity of DNA, and ritual purity.

Race–Race is to humans what variety is to plants and breed is to dogs, horses and other animals. It is also often used as a synonym for subspecies. It is a reality, although blenders try to deny it in order to break down barriers to blending. When populations appear to be different in their genetic characteristics and are readily recognized as being different then they are called races or subspecies.

Radio example–One of our favorite ways to explain some of our concepts is to use a radio as an example. Radio waves are all around us, but unless you have a radio with all the right parts, along with a power source, and unless that radio is tuned into the right frequency, you won’t pick up any sounds. Remove just one of many very tiny but essential parts of that radio, and it won’t work. The radio has to be “born”with those parts. It can’t acquire them, and no amount of praying or living right or doing various ritual things will change that. In humans, the right parts are genes and the order of the genes and all things relating to DNA.

Recessive genes–Most “White” genes are recessive. This means that if a White person has children with a non-White person, the children will favor the non-White person in most characteristics. It takes two White people to produce a truly White child.

Revelation–The First Cause has revealed His Will to and through Arman, The Teacher.

Sacred Symbols–Representations of the true nature of God and existence. Circles, spirals, fylfots. Believers have such symbols near or on their skin. They have a mystical but real correspondence. Believers generally prefer a rounded arm version of the fylfot. Some prefer two arms, some prefer three arms, some prefer four arms, some prefer five or six arms. The essential part of the fylfot is not the arms, but the spinning center or axis. The arms are always trailing the spin, not leading it. In nature, they are the result of the spinning center. When viewed from the side, over time, the spinning fylfot looks like a tornado or a strand of DNA or many of the other things we observe in nature. The fylfot as a religious symbol must be with believers at all times. Indicates constant expansion. Symbols should touch the skin. May be put on the skin with scars, tattoos, brands, rings, amulets.

Self-identification, self-determination, self-reliance, self-government,self-improvement, self-perfection–are considered important.

Self-organization— Ability of a system to spontaneously arrange its components or elements in a purposeful (non-random) manner, under appropriate conditions but without the help of an external agency.

Sen, The–Another name for strong believers.

Sensory Input–Sensory input is important in rituals and for creating a sense of awe. Thus, when praying one must be surrounded by the proper stimuli.

Single point mutation–a mutation that involves a single nucleotide. For example, sickle-cell disease is a single point mutation in which GAG is changed to GTG.

Ser, The–The flow of existence.

Source, The–Another name for God.

Speciation–The evolutionary formation of a new species, often by the division of a single species into two or more genetically distinct ones, usually by isolation that prevents gene flow. Speciation happens rapidly in small isolated populations.

Speciation has been demonstrated to be possible in as few as eight generations in Drosophila (fruit flies). It can also be caused by selective breeding as is done in animal husbandry.

Spiral–One of the Sacred Symbols in all its forms. All of existence is dependent on the constant spinning, turning, twirling, spiraling. It is this constant spinning movement that shuffles all that exists and is why the only constant is change. The spiral is seen in distant galaxies, in storms, in water draining from a sink, in the way trees grow, in DNA, and in all of existence if you know how to look. If the spinning stopped, existence would stop. The spiral is the result of spinning with the addition of time. Ancient peoples often used spiral symbols, but did not then understand the ubiquitousness of the spinning or its necessity to existence. There is a mystery about such symbols and a teacher has said that they form an actual and real link to much that is seen and unseen. A teacher has said that there are other symbols that seek to dampen the effects of these symbols for good, and these other symbols often have something of a cat’s cradle appearance with straight lines and sharp angles.

Struggle, The–The First Cause’s struggle to be and to be more. It continues the struggle to this day. The struggle against nothingness is part of all existence and it continues by the spinning that brings light and heat to an otherwise dark and cold nothingness. Even humans must struggle to exist and to be and to be more. To not struggle is to fall back into the masses of humanity and not evolve toward the first light and the First Cause. It takes no effort and no struggle to be dark and cold. It does take constant effort and constant struggle to be light and warm.

Survival advantage–A genetic change from the norm that gives organisms a “leg up” on other organisms in the same habitat or environment. Often involves minor changes that have long term effects.

Survival of the fittest–Natural selection conceived of as a struggle for life in which only those organisms best adapted to existing conditions are able to survive and reproduce. We know that all organisms now alive are the fittest of their types, just by their being alive today. However, if they don’t reproduce in their image to go forward into the next generation, they will be defined retroactively as not being the fittest. Organisms must reproduce to be the fittest.

Survival strategies–All organisms have built-in genetic survival strategies that have evolved to allow the organism’s genes to be passed on to the next generation. If the survival strategy is a good one, then the organism’s genotype will survive. In thinking of survival strategies, it must be remembered that the individual is not especially important. It is getting the genotype–the code–to survive and be passed on to expand the particular code carried by the organism.

Unfit–Organisms or populations of organisms that are not adapted to prevailing conditions or which do not produce offspring in sufficient numbers to maintain their contribution to the gene pool of the next generation.

White skin–A mutation that occurred in Europe to adapt the people there so their skin would let in more of the dim European sunlight to produce more Vitamin D than darker skin colors. It gave a survival advantage to those with the mutation, in that with more Vitamin D, those with the mutation didn’t get the bone softening disease rickets, and lived longer to produce more children who also carried the mutation. In time, the white skin mutation spread throughout Europe.Scientists now believe that a tiny mutation in gene slc24a5, located on the long leg of chromosome 15 at position 21.1, started in the few people who left Africa and headed into Europe about 20,000 to 50,000 years ago, was a major reason for the emergence of white skin.

JONATHAN HAIDT IS ONE OF THE MOST coherent thinkers in the social sciences today. A Professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, he specializes in the study of morality and emotion, and how they vary across cultures. He describes himself as an atheist, and embraces the notion that there is such a thing as “human nature,” in the sense that our behavior is profoundly influenced by innate predispositions. For that alone he would have suffered the anathemas of his fellow experts in the behavioral sciences a few short decades ago. Until quite recently they were still in thrall of the collective delusion that human behavior is almost entirely determined by culture and education. But Haidt doesn’t stop there. His work focuses on our moral nature, and he is of the opinion that moral reasoning is not the basis of moral judgment. Rather, he supports what he calls the social intuitionist model, according to which moral judgments are the result of quick, automatic intuitions, including moral emotions. Moral reasoning commonly only appears after moral decisions have already been made, serving to rationalize them after the fact. Innate, evolved traits play a significant role in the process. In Haidt’s words from the paper, “The Emotional Dog and its Rational Tail: A Social Intuitionist Approach to Moral Judgment,”

The social intuitionist model… proposes that morality, like language, is a major evolutionary adaptation for an intensely social species, built into multiple regions of the brain and body, that is better described as emergent than as learned yet that requires input and shaping from a particular culture. Moral intuitions are therefore both innate and enculturated.

Obviously, we have come a long way since the 60s and 70s, when the entire orthodox scientific establishment was defending the cherished but palpably absurd dogma that “human nature” was almost entirely the result of education and culture, and the effect of innate predispositions of the kind Haidt (pictured above) refers to on human behavior were insignificant. In one of the more remarkable paradigm shifts in scientific history, they have finally been forced by the weight of evidence to abandon that delusion. For all that, they have shown a remarkable resistance to facing the obvious implications of the truth they have finally embraced. Nowhere has that been more true than in the field of morality.

If what Haidt says is true, then human morality is the expression of evolved behavioral traits. As such, it cannot be other than subjective in nature. Objective good and evil cannot exist because there is no legitimate basis for their existence. Morality has no purpose, nor does it serve any higher end. It exists purely and simply because it has increased the odds that carriers of the genes that give rise to it would survive and reproduce those genes. In spite of these seemingly elementary facts, no human illusion is as persistent and resilient as the belief in objective good.

Haidt explores some related issues in his book, The Happiness Hypothesis. It’s a good read, consisting of a collection of interesting ideas, insights and recent research results and concluding with an examination of the question, “What is the meaning of life.” According to Haidt, the question, “What is the meaning of life?” really consists of two sub-questions: What is the purpose of life? and What should be our purpose within life? He does not attempt an answer to the first, but focuses on the second, noting that it refers to what we should do to have a good, happy, fulfilling and meaningful life. Haidt devotes the final portion of the book to the question. There is something rather striking about his answer. It requires acceptance of the theory of group selection.

Why is that striking? Back in the day when, as noted above, virtually the entire orthodox scientific establishment was proclaiming the dogma that “human nature” was almost exclusively the result of education and culture, the most influential and significant writer insisting that the establishment was wrong, recognized as such at the time by proponents of both points of view, was Robert Ardrey. Well, it so happens that Ardrey, a brilliant writer with a profound grasp of the big picture, was right and the establishment was wrong about the role of the innate on human behavior. Yet today his name is hardly mentioned in the same breath with Galileo, or any of the other great destroyers of false orthodoxies in the sciences for that matter. Rather, he has been almost entirely forgotten. It happens, you see, that Ardrey was outside the academic pale. He was, in fact, a playwright for much of his career, and it would be too painful for the guild of “experts” to admit that a mere playwright like Ardrey had correctly insisted on an abundantly obvious truth at a time when they were still collectively defending a cherished but palpably false delusion.

Eventually, when the delusion collapsed, resulting in one of the more remarkable paradigm shifts in the history of the sciences, the “experts” constructed an entire alternative reality, exemplified by Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate, according to which, incredibly, Ardrey had been “totally and utterly wrong,” and the real hero had been the more respectable and palatable E.O. Wilson, no matter that the ideas he set forth in books like Sociobiology and On Human Nature were no more than a reformulation of Ardrey’s thought. Now the chances that Pinker ever actually read Ardrey before dismissing him as “totally and utterly wrong” are vanishingly small, but he cited Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene as the basis of his claim, as if Dawkins were as infallible as the pope. Dawkins, in turn, based his entire criticism of Ardrey on some remarks he made in his book The Social Contract about a theory that was of no particular significance whatsoever as far as the fundamental question of the role of the innate on human behavior is concerned. And what was that theory? Why, none other than the theory of group selection, without which Haidt’s “Happiness Hypothesis” evaporates in the mist. It appears that Dawkins was somewhat premature in announcing its demise. Such are the narratives that occasionally pass for “history” in the sciences. Meanwhile, Ardrey remains an unperson. I should think he deserves better.

THE SOLE CHARACTERISTIC that ultimately distinguishes living from non-living matter is classical Darwinian evolution. Life is simply matter that evolves.

A simple analysis of the definition of life leads to the conclusion that living matter is inanimate matter that evolves. Evolution is the sole feature that differentiates living matter from non-living matter.

Consider a definition of life from the old college days:

Life is the property of a highly organized molecular complex, the stability of which is maintained by its constant utilization of energy.

It seems a bit flowery, so to simplify:

Life is organized matter self-maintained by energy utilization….

Energy utilization is essential to maintain the stability of life forms because, without it, life forms are very unstable and decompose into non-living matter. In fact, life forms are so unstable that, even with energy utilization, they all eventually die….

Does the Definition Exclude All Non-Living Matter?

There are many examples of non-living matter maintained by their utilization of energy. Some examples are waterfalls, volcanoes, hurricanes, and stars. So, a definition of life requires something more to exclude such non-living matter. Adding something about reproduction might help:

Life is organized matter self-maintained by energy utilization and a process that reproduces its structure for self-maintained energy utilization in the future….

By specifying that life must include a reproductive process, inanimate matter like waterfalls and hurricanes are excluded. However, some scientists might argue rather convincingly that stars reproduce. To eliminate stars as living matter, a process that more faithfully reproduces itself could be added:

Life is organized matter self-maintained by energy utilization and a process that accurately reproduces its structure for self-maintained energy utilization in the future.

This simple definition seems to eliminate stars and other forms of inanimate matter. Specifying a nucleic acid-based reproductive mechanism rather than just a reproductive process would accurately define all of the known forms of life. But the general definition above allows for the possibility of other hypothesized mechanisms such as those based on lipids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or polyphosphates.

Perfect Clones Can’t Cut It.

Any life form with a reproductive process that creates an exact copy or a perfect clone of itself would satisfy the requirement of a process that accurately reproduces itself. Such a process would always produce the same exact structure and function for energy utilization and self-maintenance in a given environment. However, in a changed environment, functional energy utilization and self-maintenance might benefit from, or even require, new structure(s).

Every Environment Changes With Time.

In order for a life form to persist through time, it must have a mechanism that provides for structural changes to function in a changed environment. Some life forms can produce exact copies or perfect clones, but most importantly, they also provide mechanisms for introducing structural changes by mutation or recombination. No life forms exist that cannot provide such changes. So, the definition of life becomes:

Life is organized matter self-maintained by energy utilization and a process that accurately reproduces its general organizational structure with a mechanism that allows for structural changes to utilize energy for self-maintenance in a changed environment.

Based on this definition of life, the sole characteristic that distinguishes living from non-living matter is a reproductive mechanism that allows for structural changes to utilize energy for self-maintenance in a changed environment.

Adaptation is Essential.

When successful structural changes to utilize energy for self-maintenance in a changed environment are produced, adaptation is said to occur. Over time, with continuously changing environments and adaptations, life forms undergo natural selection and classical Darwinian evolution. Thus, for periods of time exceeding the lifespans of individuals, the sole characteristic that distinguishes living and non-living matter is the process of Darwinian evolution. So, what is life?

Life is matter that evolves.

Most fundamentally, the definition becomes:

Life is evolution.

The two are inseparable. Given the fact that all life forms die, how do they persist through time and changing environments? Every environment harboring life forms must change, simply because of their existence, so evolution is the only way life forms can persist through time. Not only did Charles Darwin discover what makes life possible despite the fact that all life forms eventually die, he unwittingly discovered the sole feature that distinguishes living from non-living matter. Charles Darwin defined life.

Life is Evolution.

“Most people blindly take paths without even knowing that they are taking them and that there are others that they could have taken or can take. They are not conscious.

“We, on the other hand, have selected our path from the many that are possible for us. It is a path toward greater consciousness and it is achieved via our DNA and the changes that we can help bring to it by following this faith.

“Organisms are programmed out of the box. Certain parts of the program kick in at different ages and when triggered by certain events and circumstances.

“That is why our way works. We seek to change the environment internally and externally to trigger certain parts of the program that might otherwise only be triggered by accident and then be lost because of a lack of awareness of the change.

“By triggering the right parts of our code, our bodies will secrete hormones and other substances in certain ways to cause additional changes.This will move us higher and open us up to the mutations that we need to move from our present status as a subspecies to being a full species no longer capable of breeding with other kinds of humans.

“You see, man, you and I and all the millions of our people ain’t worth nothin’ unless we breed and breed right.

“Ain’t you fed up with the self-indulgent jerks among us who are concerned about ‘finding themselves’ or who say stupid things like they don’t want children because it would affect the ‘quality of life’ of these sad sack childless ones. Their lives? Their petty little meaningless lives? Screw them. They’re weak seeds, man, at least many of them are. Others are just misinformed or have been conditioned to believe wrong things.

“Look, our purpose is to be a link in the chain. We are to expand always and contract never. That means we are to have as many children as possible during our lives, in our image, and we’re to do it even if we have to break the false laws, rules and mores of our corrupt society.

“Our laws are from the First Cause, man. They can never be wrong. Human-made laws that conflict with these natural laws from the First Cause are wrong at best, and evil in many cases. Our laws are natural laws. We didn’t make them up. We discovered them and in some cases the First Cause revealed them to us.

“We can either follow man or follow the First Cause. That’s the choice, man. It’s very simple and it’s very clear. There’s no reason to be confused or befuddled.

“But, this ain’t so much about us as individuals as it is about the Code that we carry. That Code inside us, man, that’s the real us. That’s what survives the death of our bodies. That’s what goes forward if we have many children, but only if we have them with our kind and with no other kinds.

“This is my faith man. It is for Ourselves Alone and for no others. We’re the only ones who have the right DNA Code to take this path. But we need to choose to take it.”

“HEY MAN,” said Homeless Jack, ” let me tell you a little more about Arman’s teachings.

“Arman says that we have to think in terms of ‘our people’ and ‘not our people,’ if we are to head off our extinction, expand our kind and prosper.

“But, you won’t understand what he really means so long as you have an incorrect mindset that holds that the person you see in the mirror is the whole of the essential you.

“See, Arman repeatedly says that if you start your thought process by thinking about yourself as the complete organism you are, this gets you off the correct path and then leads you to think about human races in an incorrect way and leaves you open to having false ideas planted in your subconscious by those who want us to blend back in with the rest of humanity. You have to start your thinking way upstream from this.

“A good place to start your upstream thinking is by realizing that ‘you’ — the person in the mirror — are a manifestation of your DNA code. That DNA code is the core that has spun out that person you see in the mirror. But it’s not as though the unique DNA code you carry has an existence separate from you, because it doesn’t. You and it are one. It ‘projects’ you from within every cell of your body. You need it to exist and it needs you to exist in the form it has within you, and as you.

“People in other religions talk about a raceless, usually non-physical or non-material soul or spirit that they believe is the real person, and they believe that it inhabits a body that is often considered evil and a burden on the soul or spirit.

“They’re wrong, man, and they’ve been wrong for centuries. You are the real you — and the DNA code that has made you and which is inside you is the part of you that goes on after your death if you’ve had children in your image who survive you. And, remember, the DNA code is physical and material and it’s not raceless.

“You also need to understand, man, that the DNA code inside all life that we are aware of, including us, is the offspring of that first DNA molecule that came into existence. The basic DNA code is about as close to something immortal as we’re going to find on Earth. It just keeps spinning out life in myriad forms.

“But once that life is spun out in whatever form it takes and however different or similar it is from other life forms, it is up to that life form to struggle to compete and try to dominate as much of existence as it can. This struggling is an automatic process and is seen in the organism as a will to comfort. With the differences, nature also gives all organisms means to defend themselves in the struggle — often, ‘tooth and claw.’

“However, one of the side-effects of our human version of ‘tooth and claw’ — our brain — is that we can think about such things. This being the case, it appears that we have been given the keys to guide our own evolution, but they are keys that must be used or we will devolve. In a sense, nature has kicked us out of our mother’s basement and told us to make our own way in life as fully functioning adults.

“So, what are we to do? Well, we must understand the natural way of existence and we must realize that whether we live or die as individuals is less important in the larger scheme of things than whether or not we expand ourselves by having as many children in our image as possible. By having as many children in our image as possible, we expand the code that we carry. That is the goal of the DNA code that makes and sustains us, and that is the purpose of all life.

“What if you have children outside of our people or if you have no children? Your code does not go on, man. It’s like I told you before. A human male contributes 23 of his 46 chromosomes to a new child and a human female also contributes 23 of her chromosomes to that child so that a child is born with the 46 chromosomes that is normal for our species. Those chromosomes carry our DNA code. If you mate outside the people — outside your race (race is actually a sub-species) — the child who is born does not get the full complement of 46 chromosomes of our people. In other words, you do not survive if your DNA code does not survive.

“You don’t have to overthink this, man. Nature has made your eyes the king of your senses so you can usually tell who is like you and who isn’t. Your eyes are connected to your libido and to your survival instincts for a reason. If you’re a mentally healthy person who has been deprogrammed from the genocidal beliefs of society today, just trust your eyes and you’ll be okay under most circumstances.

“In fact, your brain is automatically programmed to tell like from non-like. It’s a survival mechanism. One glance at another and you can usually tell — at least subconsciously — if they are like you or not.

“But, here’s the rub, man. Society is trying to condition you away from this survival mechanism. Society is trying to convince you that such things as physical appearance are superficial. This is an error in thinking. Don’t buy it man. Trust your eyes and you’ll be safer. And, by trusting your eyes you may live longer to breed more and expand your individual version of the code.

“Okay, now I’m gettin’ pissed off, because this makes me think about the numbnuts who try to minimize the importance of our white skin. You’ve heard these dimwits saying things like ‘Skin color doesn’t matter,’ or ‘I just happened to have been born white,’ or ‘We’re all the same under the skin.’ Well, that’s all BS, man.

“You know where they’re going wrong? They’re equating skin color to paint. And, they’re dead wrong. Skin color isn’t sprayed on some samey-same universal human blank coming off an assembly line like it’s an automobile.

“Our skin color is an integral and essential part of who and what we are, and it comes from within. It is part of our unique code and is just one of many differences we have that are taking us on a different evolutionary path to a different destiny if we make the right choices in life.

“So, ‘looking like us’ starts with white skin. Then it involves bone structure, eye color, hair color and type and on and on. We’re not clones of each other so there will still be plenty of differences, but the basic similarities are there so that anyone with any intelligence will usually recognize like from not like. Just look, man. Just look.

“You with me so far? The real us is the genetic code that we carry. It is the code that makes us who and what we are and it is that code that is passed on to our children if we have children with those like us. It is the code that gives us life beyond the death of our particular body.

“Nah, this ain’t some ego kind of thing. It’s nature and nature’s way for life. Nature’s prime command for life — all life — is to make more like itself.

“Nature constantly tinkers with the basic code that reads: ‘life,’ so that the code will be able to expand in some form of life that is comfortable and able to prosper in every niche and every environment. But it isn’t the fact that we all started with that single molecule of DNA that is important to us on this level of existence, but the fact that we have evolved into different types. It is up to us to see that our type expands — no one or anything else will ensure that.

“Okay, man, let me back up a little and make a picture for you while leaving out all the minutiae. Millions of years ago, some so-called non-living chemicals somehow got mixed together and formed a DNA molecule. Now, this was and is a remarkable molecule because it endlessly ‘eats’ other chemicals in order to expand itself so that it can fill all environments and niches with itself.

“But, how does it do this? This way: It has the remarkable ability to change parts of itself to adapt to different conditions. If there’s water, the DNA will adapt and bring forth organisms to carry it and to live and prosper there. If there’s land, it will adapt to bring forth organisms to carry it and to live and prosper there. If it’s hot, cold, rainy, dry, whatever, the code will change so it brings forth life that will carry it and will be comfortable and prosper. The DNA code is eating its way across the universe, man, and as it does so it is transforming so-called non-living chemicals into life forms that can carry it.

“Just how changeable the code is still isn’t known, but as far as the Earth goes, we find life of some type living and prospering in just about every niche possible. That means the basic DNA code is still here after all these millions of years.

“Humans are just one manifestation of that DNA code that started millions of years ago and as with all life, we continue to evolve.

“However, as I just told you, humans have reached a point where we can think about these things. Arman says that because we have reached this point, not only can we think about these things, but we must think about them and we must, in our own interest, start guiding our own evolution.

“I’ll tell you more next time, man. But for now, remember to breed to your fullest and start eating your way across the universe to expand your DNA code. It is nature’s way.”

ON THE EVE of the great contest Dayton is full of sickening surges and tremors of doubt. Five or six weeks ago, when the infidel Scopes was first laid by the heels, there was no uncertainty in all this smiling valley. The town boomers leaped to the assault as one man. Here was an unexampled, almost a miraculous chance to get Dayton upon the front pages, to make it talked about, to put it upon the map. But how now?

Today, with the curtain barely rung up and the worst buffooneries to come, it is obvious to even town boomers that getting upon the map, like patriotism, is not enough. The getting there must be managed discreetly, adroitly, with careful regard to psychological niceties. The boomers of Dayton, alas, had no skill at such things, and the experts they called in were all quacks. The result now turns the communal liver to water. Two months ago the town was obscure and happy. Today it is a universal joke.

I have been attending the permanent town meeting that goes on in Robinson’s drug store, trying to find out what the town optimists have saved from the wreck. All I can find is a sort of mystical confidence that God will somehow come to the rescue to reward His old and faithful partisans as they deserve – that good will flow eventually out of what now seems to be heavily evil. More specifically, it is believed that settlers will be attracted to the town as to some refuge from the atheism of the great urban Sodoms and Gomorrahs.

But will these refugees bring any money with them? Will they buy lots and build houses, Will they light the fires of the cold and silent blast furnace down the railroad tracks? On these points, I regret to report, optimism has to call in theology to aid it. Prayer can accomplish a lot. It can cure diabetes, find lost pocketbooks and restrain husbands from beating their wives. But is prayer made any more efficacious by giving a circus first? Coming to this thought, Dayton begins to sweat.

The town, I confess, greatly surprised me. I expected to find a squalid Southern village, with darkies snoozing on the horse-blocks, pigs rooting under the houses and the inhabitants full of hookworm and malaria. What I found was a country town full of charm and even beauty – a somewhat smallish but nevertheless very attractive Westminster or Belair.

The houses are surrounded by pretty gardens, with cool green lawns and stately trees. The two chief streets are paved from curb to curb. The stores carry good stocks and have a metropolitan air, especially the drug, book, magazine, sporting goods and soda-water emporium of the estimable Robinson. A few of the town ancients still affect galluses and string ties, but the younger bucks are very nattily turned out. Scopes himself, even in his shirt sleeves, would fit into any college campus in America save that of Harvard alone.

Nor is there any evidence in the town of that poisonous spirit which usually shows itself when Christian men gather to defend the great doctrine of their faith. I have heard absolutely no whisper that Scopes is in the pay of the Jesuits, or that the whisky trust is backing him, or that he is egged on by the Jews who manufacture lascivious moving pictures. On the contrary, the Evolutionists and the Anti-Evolutionists seem to be on the best of terms, and it is hard in a group to distinguish one from another.

The basic issues of the case, indeed, seem to be very little discussed at Dayton. What interests everyone is its mere strategy. By what device, precisely, will Bryan trim old Clarence Darrow? Will he do it gently and with every delicacy of forensics, or will he wade in on high gear and make a swift butchery of it? For no one here seems to doubt that Bryan will win – that is, if the bout goes to a finish. What worries the town is the fear that some diabolical higher power will intervene on Darrow’s side – that is, before Bryan heaves him through the ropes.

The lack of Christian heat that I have mentioned is probably due in part to the fact that the fundamentalists are in overwhelming majority as far as the eye can reach – according to most local statisticians, in a majority of at least nine-tenths. There are, in fact, only two downright infidels in all Rhea county, and one of them is charitably assumed to be a bit balmy. The other, a yokel roosting far back in the hills, is probably simply a poet got into the wrong pew. The town account of him is to the effect that he professes to regard death as a beautiful adventure.

When the local ecclesiastics begin alarming the peasantry with word pictures of the last sad scene, and sulphurous fumes begin to choke even Unitarians, this skeptical rustic comes forward with his argument that it is foolish to be afraid of what one knows so little about – that, after all, there is no more genuine evidence that anyone will ever go to hell than there is that the Volstead act will ever be enforced.

Such blasphemous ideas naturally cause talk in a Baptist community, but both of the infidels are unmolested. Rhea county, in fact, is proud of its tolerance, and apparently with good reason. The Klan has never got a foothold here, though it rages everywhere else in Tennessee. When the first kleagles came in they got the cold shoulder, and pretty soon they gave up the county as hopeless. It is run today not by anonymous daredevils in white nightshirts, but by well-heeled Free-masons in decorous white aprons. In Dayton alone there are sixty thirty-second-degree Masons – an immense quota for so small a town. They believe in keeping the peace, and so even the stray Catholics of the town are treated politely, though everyone naturally regrets they are required to report to the Pope once a week.

It is probably this unusual tolerance, and not any extraordinary passion for the integrity of Genesis, that has made Dayton the scene of a celebrated case, and got its name upon the front pages, and caused its forward-looking men to begin to wonder uneasily if all advertising is really good advertising. The trial of Scopes is possible here simply because it can be carried on here without heat – because no one will lose any sleep even if the devil comes to the aid of Darrow and Malone, and Bryan gets a mauling. The local intelligentsia venerate Bryan as a Christian, but it was not as a Christian that they called him in, but as one adept at attracting the newspaper boys – in brief, as a showman. As I have said, they now begin to mistrust the show, but they still believe that he will make a good one, win or lose.

Elsewhere, North or South, the combat would become bitter. Here it retains the lofty qualities of the duello. I gather the notion, indeed, that the gentlemen who are most active in promoting it are precisely the most lacking in hot conviction – that it is, in its local aspects, rather a joust between neutrals than a battle between passionate believers. Is it a mere coincidence that the town clergy have been very carefully kept out of it? There are several Baptist brothers here of such powerful gifts that when they begin belaboring sinners the very rats of the alleys flee to the hills. They preach dreadfully. But they are not heard from today. By some process to me unknown they have been induced to shut up – a far harder business, I venture, than knocking out a lion with a sandbag. But the sixty thirty-second degree Masons of Dayton have somehow achieved it.

Thus the battle joins and the good red sun shines down. Dayton lies in a fat and luxuriant valley. The bottoms are green with corn, pumpkins and young orchards and the hills are full of reliable moonshiners, all save one of them Christian men. We are not in the South here, but hanging on to the North. Very little cotton is grown in the valley. The people in politics are Republicans and put Coolidge next to Lincoln and John Wesley. The fences are in good repair. The roads are smooth and hard. The scene is set for a high-toned and even somewhat swagger combat. When it is over all the participants save Bryan will shake hands.

SUCH OBSCENITIES as the forthcoming trial of the Tennessee evolutionist, if they serve no other purpose, at least call attention dramatically to the fact that enlightenment, among mankind, is very narrowly dispersed. It is common to assume that human progress affects everyone – that even the dullest man, in these bright days, knows more than any man of, say, the Eighteenth Century, and is far more civilized. This assumption is quite erroneous. The men of the educated minority, no doubt, know more than their predecessors, and of some of them, perhaps, it may be said that they are more civilized – though I should not like to be put to giving names – but the great masses of men, even in this inspired republic, are precisely where the mob was at the dawn of history. They are ignorant, they are dishonest, they are cowardly, they are ignoble. They know little if anything that is worth knowing, and there is not the slightest sign of a natural desire among them to increase their knowledge.

Such immortal vermin, true enough, get their share of the fruits of human progress, and so they may be said, in a way, to have their part in it. The most ignorant man, when he is ill, may enjoy whatever boons and usufructs modern medicine may offer – that is, provided he is too poor to choose his own doctor. He is free, if he wants to, to take a bath. The literature of the world is at his disposal in public libraries. He may look at works of art. He may hear good music. He has at hand a thousand devices for making life less wearisome and more tolerable: the telephone, railroads, bichloride tablets, newspapers, sewers, correspondence schools, delicatessen. But he had no more to do with bringing these things into the world than the horned cattle in the fields, and he does no more to increase them today than the birds of the air.

On the contrary, he is generally against them, and sometimes with immense violence. Every step in human progress, from the first feeble stirrings in the abyss of time, has been opposed by the great majority of men. Every valuable thing that has been added to the store of man’s possessions has been derided by them when it was new, and destroyed by them when they had the power. They have fought every new truth ever heard of, and they have killed every truth-seeker who got into their hands.

The so-called religious organizations which now lead the war against the teaching of evolution are nothing more, at bottom, than conspiracies of the inferior man against his betters. They mirror very accurately his congenital hatred of knowledge, his bitter enmity to the man who knows more than he does, and so gets more out of life. Certainly it cannot have gone unnoticed that their membership is recruited, in the overwhelming main, from the lower orders – that no man of any education or other human dignity belongs to them. What they propose to do, at bottom and in brief, is to make the superior man infamous – by mere abuse if it is sufficient, and if it is not, then by law.

Such organizations, of course, must have leaders; there must be men in them whose ignorance and imbecility are measurably less abject than the ignorance and imbecility of the average. These super-Chandala often attain to a considerable power, especially in democratic states. Their followers trust them and look up to them; sometimes, when the pack is on the loose, it is necessary to conciliate them. But their puissance cannot conceal their incurable inferiority. They belong to the mob as surely as their dupes, and the thing that animates them is precisely the mob’s hatred of superiority. Whatever lies above the level of their comprehension is of the devil. A glass of wine delights civilized men; they themselves, drinking it, would get drunk. Ergo, wine must be prohibited. The hypothesis of evolution is credited by all men of education; they themselves can’t understand it. Ergo, its teaching must be put down.

This simple fact explains such phenomena as the Tennessee buffoonery. Nothing else can. We must think of human progress, not as of something going on in the race in general, but as of something going on in a small minority, perpetually beleaguered in a few walled towns. Now and then the horde of barbarians outside breaks through, and we have an armed effort to halt the process. That is, we have a Reformation, a French Revolution, a war for democracy, a Great Awakening. The minority is decimated and driven to cover. But a few survive – and a few are enough to carry on.

The inferior man’s reasons for hating knowledge are not hard to discern. He hates it because it is complex – because it puts an unbearable burden upon his meager capacity for taking in ideas. Thus his search is always for short cuts. All superstitions are such short cuts. Their aim is to make the unintelligible simple, and even obvious. So on what seem to be higher levels. No man who has not had a long and arduous education can understand even the most elementary concepts of modern pathology. But even a hind at the plow can grasp the theory of chiropractic in two lessons. Hence the vast popularity of chiropractic among the submerged – and of osteopathy, Christian Science and other such quackeries with it. They are idiotic, but they are simple – and every man prefers what he can understand to what puzzles and dismays him.

The popularity of Fundamentalism among the inferior orders of men is explicable in exactly the same way. The cosmogonies that educated men toy with are all inordinately complex. To comprehend their veriest outlines requires an immense stock of knowledge, and a habit of thought. It would be as vain to try to teach to peasants or to the city proletariat as it would be to try to teach them to streptococci. But the cosmogony of Genesis is so simple that even a yokel can grasp it. It is set forth in a few phrases. It offers, to an ignorant man, the irresistible reasonableness of the nonsensical. So he accepts it with loud hosannas, and has one more excuse for hating his betters.

Politics and the fine arts repeat the story. The issues that the former throw up are often so complex that, in the present state of human knowledge, they must remain impenetrable, even to the most enlightened men. How much easier to follow a mountebank with a shibboleth – a Coolidge, a Wilson or a Roosevelt! The arts, like the sciences, demand special training, often very difficult. But in jazz there are simple rhythms, comprehensible even to savages.

What all this amounts to is that the human race is divided into two sharply differentiated and mutually antagonistic classes, almost two genera – a small minority that plays with ideas and is capable of taking them in, and a vast majority that finds them painful, and is thus arrayed against them, and against all who have traffic with them. The intellectual heritage of the race belongs to the minority, and to the minority only. The majority has no more to do with it than it has to do with ecclesiastic politics on Mars. In so far as that heritage is apprehended, it is viewed with enmity. But in the main it is not apprehended at all.

That is why Beethoven survives. Of the 110,000,000 so-called human beings who now live in the United States, flogged and crazed by Coolidge, Rotary, the Ku Klux and the newspapers, it is probable that at least 108,000,000 have never heard of him at all. To these immortals, made in God’s image, one of the greatest artists the human race has ever produced is not even a name. So far as they are concerned he might as well have died at birth. The gorgeous and incomparable beauties that he created are nothing to them. They get no value out of the fact that he existed. They are completely unaware of what he did in the world, and would not be interested if they were told.

The fact saves good Ludwig’s bacon. His music survives because it lies outside the plane of the popular apprehension, like the colors beyond violet or the concept of honor. If it could be brought within range, it would at once arouse hostility. Its complexity would challenge; its lace of moral purpose would affright. Soon there would be a movement to put it down, and Baptist clergymen would range the land denouncing it, and in the end some poor musician, taken in the un-American act of playing it, would be put on trial before a jury of Ku Kluxers, and railroaded to the calaboose.
